Androstenone

A blogpost on porcine sex pheremone

Article thumbnail
Adapted from a wonderful illustration by Nadia Berenstein.

Androstenone is found in the saliva of male pigs, and its scent compels female pig behaviour into a state of sexual readiness. Beginning with celery and subjective assessments of taste, Nadia Berenstein’s entertaining blogpost traces connections between pheromone research histories, virile scents and myths, and the biochemical relations between celery, pigs, truffles and humans.

(Related, but not referred to in Berenstein's post, Androstenone can also, apparently, reduce "undesirable" attention from male cats.)
