Death of a Pig
“The loss we felt was not the loss of ham but the loss of pig”

E.B. White wrote a lot about his relations with the animals he kept and wrote beautifully. There is lots to love about this wonderful & touching essay. Death of a Pig is about one particular pig, and his ambivalent relation to him. There is a real sense of the animal’s embodied and individual existence, the rich affect and character of pigs, and the unexpected sympathies that can emerge when raising an animal.
